the movie and the series are separate versions though the first movie does share some elements of the series overall the story is way different including the character backstory and ofc the story of each of them in the series and the ending is much simmilar to macross zero which is not suprising since MF is basicly the ending of the whole saga where the elements from the previous parts come together or atleast the parts that were not retconned
