from what i understand the source material is already complete but they only did the shortened version of the SAO and AO chapters and they wanted to see how the sales would turn out before the rest was made
there are also official VNs with alternative scenarios but in not familiar with those
as i said the special officially confirmed it so you should see it for yourself it has hits for the next season and small amount of setup
